Leeds United’s Stuart McKinstry might have cost them their Jake Hastie chance

As reported by the Daily Record recently, Leeds United are one of several teams interested in the signature of Motherwell winger Jake Hastie. The talented Scotland youth star has been on fire since getting a decent run in the first-team fold at Fir Park.

At the weekend, he scored again, taking his tally to four goals in his last three games. His form has helped Motherwell to a five-game winning streak and English teams are certainly keen.

His contract expires in the summer and Leeds United are believed to be one of the frontrunners to sign him.

Of course, Motherwell want to keep him. His manager Stephen Robinson told the Scottish Sun he was hopeful of keeping the player.

One of the key reasons for hope is that Motherwell have reportedly done some ‘wheeling and dealing’. Which is where it gets interesting. As reported by the Scottish Sun, Leeds bought Stuart McKinstry from the club this week. The 16-year-old will join Leeds permanently in the summer. The report claims the Whites have paid an initial £150,000 for the player, which could rise to an overall deal of £400,000.

“We’ve made Jake a good offer. James Scott signed on Wednesday, and Barry McGuire has been offered a new deal.

“We had to do a bit of wheeling and dealing in the transfer market in order to get to that stage, but Jake’s a big part of what we’re doing.”

That sort of initial fee could be exactly what Robinson is referring to regarding raising cash for Hastie’s stay.

If he does remain in Scotland and does not head to Leeds, it could, in fact, be their deal for McKinstry that got in the way.

Leeds will just be hoping they can secure both.
