Leeds not panicking over new striker as talks held with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Callum Wilson

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has confirmed that Leeds’ stance towards signing a new striker is fairly relaxed – they are seeing what comes to them.

Bailey reiterated that Norwich City’s Josh Sargent remains on their radar, and added that Leeds have held talks with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Callum Wilson.

“Josh Sargent is still one that’s very much on their radar. Burnley are also very interested, they like him an awful lot,” Bailey exclusively told TBR Football.

“Leeds aren’t panicking, they’re letting the market come to them.

“They’re one of the teams that’s held talks with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and they’ve talked to Callum Wilson at various points this summer too.

“Leeds are one of those teams that already have a decent squad, and they’ve done what they need to do so far.

“Even if the season started tomorrow they wouldn’t be desperately disappointed with what they have.

“They haven’t let Mateo Joseph go yet which may be telling, but I still expect him to go.

“They’re being sensible with what they’re doing and seeing what comes to them.”

Wilson is currently a free agent after his Newcastle contract expired, and he’s now revealed that he feels he can still offer a lot at the top.

He also made it clear he wants to play a starring role at his next club, suggesting to Leeds and other suitors that he won’t be willing to just be a super-sub.

“I had an amazing five years at Newcastle but football moves on so quickly,” Wilson told i News.

“I’m at a point in my career now where I’m 33, I still have so much to give, but I’ve not been able to show it.

“When you’re coming on for five, 10 minutes here and there within a game everyone thinks that you can’t play longer than that.

“Everyone thinks ‘he’s losing a yard of pace’, all these other things, but obviously coming on as a substitute is completely different to starting a game.

“When you come on as a sub it’s so hard to catch a second wind and before you know it the game is over. That was the only thing for me. I still feel I can offer so much.

“I had conversations with the manager [Eddie Howe] and we established that I’m not at a point mentally where I’m ready to sit on the bench and play number two for the whole season.

“I don’t mind yo-yoing here and there but it’s got to be a fair fight.”
