Leeds United’s reported £13.7m target had fruitful partnership with Elland Road cult figure

Leeds United are reportedly keen on a deal for SPAL attacker Andrea Petagna this summer. That is according to a report from Tutto Mercato Web. It is suggested that Leeds have made a €15 million (£13.7m) bid for the Italian, with the Serie A club wanting €25 million (£22.8m).

Of course, Leeds United fans will be taking this report with a pinch of salt considering the source and the apparent fees involved.

TMW have often reported on Leeds interest, perhaps more so when Italian owner Massimo Cellino was at the Elland Road helm. Their reports were often hit-and-miss.

Interestingly enough, the apparent Leeds target is currently a team’mate of a cult figure from the Cellino era.

Mirco Antenucci joined Leeds in the summer of 2014 and built up a good rapport with the Leeds fans. His trademark beard and sublime finishing set him apart from many of the flops that came into the club during that time.

Petagna and Antenucci formed a strong strikeforce last season, with the 24-year-old even discussing his appreciation of the SPAL captain in conversation with TuttoSPAL.

“With Mirco, however, I get along very well. This is the first time I played with him, before I had only seen him from the outside and I always liked him as a striker.”

This summer, with Petagna now considered the lead striker, Antenucci was in fact allowed to leave SPAL to join Bari so it would be odd for the club to now sell him on to Leeds United.

Indeed, the decision to allow their captain a move away certainly indicates an unlikeliness to sanction a Leeds United transfer.
