The rivalry between Leeds United and Derby County became one of the biggest in the Championship last season. Stemming from the spygate scandal the two clubs ended up at each other’s throats most of the season.
From ‘Stop Crying Frank Lampard’ to Twitter ‘banter’ from One Direction members, the clubs fans truly grew to dislike each other over the season.
In the end, Derby might have got the last laugh, by ending Leeds United’s promotion hopes in the play-offs.
But both teams will face each other next season, after Derby failed to win promotion themselves.
Marcelo Bielsa will still be in charge at Leeds but Lampard, the target for much of Leeds’ fan vitriol might not. He is seemingly in the running for the Chelsea job this summer and Derby are now looking at potential options in case that happens.
One man who is reportedly on their radar would certainly add a new dimension to the rivalry. As reported by the Daily Mail, Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer is being lined up by The Rams.
Bowyer is, of course, a former Leeds player and remains very popular at Elland Road. His goal against AC Milan in the Champions League remains a great Leeds moment.
It could certainly placate the rivalry somewhat if Bowyer were to end up at Derby. But if both clubs are going for promotion, expect plenty of fireworks between these two clubs. Regardless of who sits in the dugout.
