Leeds United’s automatic promotion hopes are no longer in their own destiny and they must now rely on either Norwich or Sheffield United dropping points.
An Easter period which saw Marcelo Bielsa’s men beaten by Wigan and Brentford has all but extinguished their top two hopes.
At worst they will have the play-offs to look forward to, but it could soon be a case of what might have been from the 2018/19 campaign.
Despite Leeds’ season still in the balance that hasn’t stopped speculation as to who the club might choose to target during the summer.

Brentford’s Yoann Barbet has been linked to Elland Road today, courtesy of a report in French publication L’Equipe.
The 25-year-old is out of contract during the summer and with no offer forthcoming, he could leave Griffin Park on a free transfer.
This should tempt Leeds into action. Bielsa has been forced to go the whole season with just Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper as his two recognised senior central defenders. Whenever those two have been injured or suspended it’s usually been a case of a square peg being placed in a round hole.

That can’t happen next season regardless of the league which Leeds are playing in. The chance to sign such a reliable, uncompromising defender for free doesn’t occur every transfer window.
