The Whites defender has placed Kalvin Phillips and Ruben Neves in the same bracket.

Leeds United defender Barry Douglas has claimed that Kalvin Phillips is the best player he has played with during his career.

During an interview with the club’s official website, the ex-Wolves player even compared Phillips to Ruben Neves.

In September the Leeds midfielder penned a new five-year deal at Elland Road and has been the driving force behind the club’s 2019/20 campaign.

The 24-year-old has played 175 games for the club since graduating from the youth academy.

Some supporters were concerned he might leave last summer. Sheffield United and Aston Villa were both interested in taking him to the Premier League.

Phillips is Leeds born-and-bred, however, and it’d be a dream for him to lead his hometown club into the top-flight for the first time since 2004.

Douglas was part of the Wolves squad that romped to Championship glory during the 2017/18 season.

He has been full of praise for Phillips and even compared him to Portuguese maestro Neves.

He told the club’s official website: “As a defensive midfielder and an array of passing Kalvin Phillips is probably the best I’ve played with. Similarly, Ruben Neves, his vision and passing, both can make passes look so simple that others can’t play.”

The Portuguese maestro was a revelation in the second tier when he signed for £15.8 million in 2017 (BBC).

He has since become a player interesting the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United and there’s no reason Phillips can’t do the same.

Phillips has quickly become one of the Championship’s top-performing players and he deserves a crack at the Premier League.

The youngster has been touted for a potential England call-up recently by some people.

With the European Championships being rescheduled for 2021, there is every possibility that Phillips could make the tournament.

The classy player will need to make sure he takes to the Premier League well first, but he does look set for a bright future.
