In the summer of 2017, Leeds United snapped up Jay-Roy Grot from NEC Nijmegen. The young Dutch winger joined in a reported £1.5 million deal and Leeds fans were hopeful he could be a top talent in England.

That has not been the case. Instead, Grot struggled to settle at Elland Road and is now back in Holland on loan at VVV Venlo.

What is now clear, is that Leeds targeted the wrong NEC winger that summer.

Because Grot’s fellow NEC attacker Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld has been on fire since. He had just finished his first season with his new club after joining them from PSV in 2016.

He then went on to score 13 goals and assist 17 for the Dutch side last season, earning a move to Club Brugge.

His form in Belgium then saw him handed his first international call-up for the Netherlands and he scored v Belgium on his second cap.

Recently, the Daily Mail suggested the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Everton and AC Milan were all interested in the player who is valued at over £9 million.

Leeds United clearly targeted the wrong attacker from NEC back in 2017.
