Leeds United supporters want player to start against Newcastle after U23 display

Leeds United’s Under-23 side climbed to the top of Premier League 2’s second tier with a 3-2 win over Aston Villa at Thorp Arch despite going 2-0 down – and Leeds supporters have discussed the performance of Pascal Struijk.

The Whites named a number of first-team players that remain on the fringes of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad. Pablo Hernandez, Leif Davis, and Struijk all started – while Ian Poveda, Tyler Roberts and midfielder Jack Jenkins made substitute displays.

Villa took an early two-goal lead, only for goals from Bobby Kamwa, Sam Greenwood and Roberts to turn the game on its head. Roberts and Greenwood both scored from the penalty spot, with the winner a somewhat controversial decision from the referee.

Struijk, 21, has broken into the Leeds side on a regular basis this season – after making his initial breakthrough towards the end of last season. The Dutch defender has played five times for the first team, four of which have come in the Premier League.

Against West Ham, Leeds lacked aerial presence and conceded twice from set-pieces. With Robin Koch and Diego Llorente injured, the Whites played Luke Ayling at centre-back – but fans want another big presence in the side.

Many have have urged Bielsa to start £7k-a-week (Spotrac) star Struijk on Wednesday against Newcastle after he impressed against Villa on Sunday. He played only 45 minutes of the 3-2 win and that suggests that he could be involved on Wednesday.
