Leeds United summer target Elvis Rexhbecaj makes Bundesliga loan switch

Wolfsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj has left the club to join FC Koln on loan until the end of the 2020-21 season. Despite being a regular in the Wolfsburg side last season, the Kosovan has struggled for playing time in 2019-20 and has headed to the RheinEnergieSTADION as a consequence, as detailed on the club’s official Twitter account.

That name will, of course, sound familiar to Leeds United fans.

In the summer, it was reported by German publication Bild, that Leeds were prepared to pay £7 million for the midfielder. The report suggested that Wolfsburg were willing to sell the player, as his contract was due to expire in 2020 and Norwich City were also keen.

But any chance of a deal died in May when he signed a new contract at the Volkswagen Arena, keeping with the club until 2023.

So hearing he is now on the move must have some Leeds United fans slightly vexed. Should the Whites have been back in for the player?

It has been a tough season for the 22-year-old. He has not featured at all in the Bundesliga in 2019-20, making just two appearances for the club in all competitions. So he has hardly been making Leeds jealous this term.

But last season he established himself as a versatile regular, capable of playing anywhere in midfield and even at right-back. But with Jamie Shackleton closing in on a return from injury and Leeds’ midfield generally well-stocked, it is perhaps no surprise the club did not rekindle any lingering interest in Rexhbecaj. Any transfer funds for loan deals can be spent much more wisely elsewhere.
