Leeds United should not stop pursuit of Daniel James, even if Manchester City sign him

It appears Manchester City are leading the race to sign Swansea City star Daniel James. As reported by The Sun (28/04/2019; pg 59). The Premier League giants are big fans of the player and are ready to pay £10 million for his services. They could then loan him to Spanish club Girona, with whom they have a working relationship.

It would, of course be a hammer blow to Leeds United. It looked as though James was on his way to Leeds on transfer deadline day in January. The player had agreed to a move and everything seemed to be in order.

However, at the last minute, the deal collapsed. As reported by The Telegraph, then Swans chairman Huw Jenkins pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute. The deal, which the same report alleged was an eventual £10 million deal, initially as a £1.5 million loan agreement, was gone and Leeds have suffered without their number one transfer target.

If Manchester City are in the running, then Leeds face a huge task trying to get their main man.

Or do they?

Whilst The Sun reports James could head to Girona on loan, why not Leeds United?

Marcelo Bielsa has a good relationship with Pep Guardiola. Last summer, it helped Leeds bring in Jack Harrison on loan.

With first-team chances unlikely to be forthcoming at The Etihad immediately, why not allow him time at a top club in England to continue his development. Especially Leeds, where he is clearly highly thought of.

If Leeds remain in the Championship, which is now a potential outcome of this campaign, it might be their best chance of getting their hands on the Welsh wing wizard.
