Leeds United could well miss out on John Swift to Sheffield United this summer but that could play into their hands in terms of finally getting their hands on Luke Freeman.
The Reading Chronicle reported this week that both the Whites and the Blades are monitoring Swift. The Royals star has been a standout performer once again, notching up ten assists this term.
The 25-year-old has become a key figure down in Berkshire. But with Reading not getting anywhere near the promotion scramble, interest was always bound to come from above for their playmaker.
Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa, along with Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United, both could do with a creative spark in the midfield.
However, rather than worrying about beating the Blades to the punch, Bielsa could well use the scenario in order to land a long-term target in Luke Freeman.
Out of the picture, a deal between Leeds and Sheff Utd might work out well for Freeman
While Freeman has done little wrong in Sheffield, he’s simply been kept out of the picture thanks to the stunning form of Scottish maestro, John Fleck.
However, when he has played, he’s done well in filling in. But, a recent injury has once again set him back, with Ben Osborn stepping in for Fleck last night and performing well.
So, with the Blades now in for Swift, Leeds could well use it as an ideal scenario to back down in terms of moving for Swift, but convince Chris Wilder to let Freeman move to Elland Road.
The former QPR man was wanted in the summer of 2019 by Bielsa. Then, again in the winter window this season, Bielsa once again courted the midfielder on a loan deal.
Sheffield United held firm in January but if they can land Swift, they might take a different stance this summer.
It’s a move that could suit everyone, too. Freeman would be pushed down the pecking order by Swift you’d imagine at Bramall Lane.
Leeds, then, could finally get their hands on a player who they have chased for over 12 months.
