Leeds United should let Lewie Coyle leave in the summer after latest snub

Yesterday saw Leeds United confirm the extension of Lewie Coyle’s loan at Fleetwood Town until the end of the season. It will mean the right-back will have spent two full seasons at the League One club, after spending the 2017-18 season with the Cod Army.

The Yorkshire Evening Post explained why he was allowed to stay, despite some rumblings he might be recalled.

Despite recent injury trouble, Leeds feel they have adequate right-back cover. Luke Ayling is fit again and Stuart Dallas is nearing his return. Jamie Shackleton is now also seen as above Coyle in the pecking order.

So with Coyle effectively fourth choice, is his time at Leeds coming to an end after 15 years at the club?

The defender, who only signed a new deal at Elland Road in the summer of 2017, clearly has a battle on his hands to win over Marcelo Bielsa.

“As long as I am enjoying football and playing football I am happy. I want to play football week in, week out and keep my level of performance, whether that be here or at Leeds.

“I’m aware I have this year and next year remaining on my contract at Leeds. I’m not looking too far ahead at the moment.”

– Lewie Coyle on his future

He is contracted until 2021 and Leeds, therefore, have him secured for a number of years. However, with it looking like Shackleton’s shift to right-back has forced him back in line Leeds would be right to try and cash in on Coyle in the summer.

Undoubtedly Fleetwood would be keen on a permanent deal and whilst Leeds cannot expect a massive amount for the player, his price-tag will only go down the closer he gets to the end of that contract.

It might be time for Leeds to cut ties with Coyle in the summer.
