Marcelo Bielsa made a surprise call from the start of Leeds United’s game with Reading last night. He called in Lewis Baker instead of Aapo Halme, giving the Chelsea loanee his first Championship start of the season.
It was a big opportunity for Baker, Leeds’ first signing of the summer, to stake a claim for more regular first-team football at Elland Road.
By half-time, Bielsa had seen enough.

Baker was hauled off after 45 minutes, replaced by the enigmatic Samuel Saiz. It was the right call from the Argentine, as Baker had barely contributed to the game in the opening 45 minutes.
In fact, some chatter on Twitter after the game suggested Baker was not in the best of moods post-game…
Unfortunately, it might have been Baker’s last chance to shine. Clearly, Kalvin Phillips, Adam Forshaw, Mateusz Klich and Saiz are performing at a higher level than the 23-year-old at present.
Baker is just a loanee at Leeds and there is always the threat that his parent club Chelsea will recall him to head somewhere more beneficial in the January transfer window.
In all honesty, based on this most recent display, it would not be a decision that shocks Leeds United fans.
There is clearly talent in Baker. But he looks like a player who needs to be playing week-in-week-out to build a rhythm and fully enforce himself on a game. At Leeds, that is simply not going to happen.
