Report: Leeds United face competition from Las Palmas for Rafa Mujica

Leeds United could miss out on Rafa Mujica with Las Palmas now planning to sign him from Barcelona, according to Spanish publication Canarias7.

The 20-year-old was born in Las Palmas and will become a free agent later this month.

It would represent a blow to Leeds should they miss out on the highly-rated striker. Just last month, Marca claimed that a move to Elland Road was a foregone conclusion.

The latest report suggests that with Rafa Mir heading back to Wolves and Tomas Pekhart desperately out of form, the club are mulling over whether to land a new striker or not.

Leeds could do with some more firepower this summer. Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford both had their moments last season, but the duo both struggled to remain fit.

A third striking option wouldn’t go amiss and Mujica would fit the peripheral up-and-coming role down to the ground.

Last season Mujica played 33 times for Barcelona’s B team, netting seven goals.

TBR Verdict

Losing out on the Spaniard would represent a blow to Leeds this summer.

It has appeared that a deal was signed, sealed and delivered a few weeks ago but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Heading to Las Palmas must be an attractive proposition for Mujica as it would see him return ‘home’, given that he was born on the island.

First-team football would probably be more forthcoming at his hometown team. Las Palmas finished 12th in Segunda Division last season and will hope to improve their fortunes during 2019/20.

A move to Elland Road could see him link-up with the development squad first and then force his way into the first-team from there.

His ability still suggests it would be a blow for Leeds to miss out and it will be interesting to see if Leeds now ramp up their efforts to land the talisman.
