Leeds United were defeated 1-0 by Sheffield United on Saturday, handing their automatic promotion hopes a hefty blow.
The loss leaves the Whites in third place in the Championship.
With eight games left to play automatic promotion is now out of Leeds’ hands and they have work to do.
Perhaps a bigger blow for Marcelo Bielsa’s men was the injury sustained by Pontus Jansson.
The club has today confirmed on their official website that the Swede will be out of action for three weeks.
Jansson finished Saturday’s game in goal following a red card to Kiko Casilla.
The 28-year-old has been a standout performer for Bielsa’s team this season and is absence could be seriously damaging.
If losing to the Blades was bad, losing Jansson for three weeks could be terminal for their chances of a top-two finish.
The Sweden international leads from the back and his influence on a young squad will be sorely missed.
Gaetano Berardi will likely fill in for the Leeds skipper but his quality is far inferior.
For Bielsa, the challenge now is to find a way of winning without Jansson.
They have done it on three other occasions this season but those games didn’t have the added pressure of the finish line being in sight.
Whichever way Leeds fans want to look at it, Jansson’s injury could seriously harm their Premier League ambitions.
