Leeds United might end up regretting Oliver Sarkic departure

Leeds United got rid of plenty of young players who they felt would not make it at the first-team level going forward in the summer.

The likes of Tom Pearce, Aapo Halme and Mallik Wilks, for example, were all moved on.

Another player who fell into that category was Oliver Sarkic. The 2017 signing from Benfica had some injury trouble at Thorp Arch and never made an impact on the Leeds first-team. He also struggled to impress during a loan spell at Spanish outfit Barakaldo last season. Therefore, he was allowed to leave Leeds for nothing in the summer, joining League One side Burton Albion.

After his exit, he seemed to criticise the way the ‘fantastic’ Leeds under-23 and first-team dynamic had fallen apart after Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival in an interview with Sport/Voetbalmagazine. So it would appear Sarkic doesn’t feel he got a fair shot at Elland Road.

But could it be an exit Leeds one day regret?

Sarkic has been in great form for the Brewers this season. After playing his way into Nigel Clough’s regular plans the Montenegrin has been in fine form.

Playing across the front-three, Sarkic has provided 10 assists and scored five goals from his 35 games at his new club.

Undoubtedly, Sarkic was not ready to play a role in the Leeds first-team this season. But he had another year left on his contract and perhaps Leeds should have considered sending him out on loan one more time before giving up completely.

Either way, it is great to see that Sarkic has found form at his new club. Hopefully, he can go on to have a great career away from West Yorkshire.
