Leeds United linked Nicolas Gonzalez scores third goal in as many games with first international strike

If you were an Argentine footballer potentially on the market this summer then the chances are Leeds United were linked with signing you. 

That was certainly the case for VfB Stuttgart forward Nicolas Gonzalez. 

The Mirror claimed that Leeds were leading the chase to sign the forward and the German club’s sporting director Thomas Hitzlsperger made it clear he would not come cheap. 

“With him you can imagine that clubs are willing to spend a lot and they have to,” Hitzlsperger is quoted as telling TAG24. “If we decide to hand him over, then it really has to be expensive.”

The same source suggested a price-tag of about £18 million for the player and no deal ever came about. 

Instead, Leeds signed Rodrigo and Raphinha to strengthen their attack. 

But Gonzalez has certainly been showcasing just what Leeds could have won with his recent performances, including this week. 

Gonzalez scored as Argentina drew 1-1 with Paraguay in a World Cup qualifier. He rose up highest to thunder home a header from Giovani Lo Celso’s corner to secure a point for the Albiceleste.

It was his first goal for his country and adds to the two goals he has scored in his last two Bundesliga outings with Stuttgart. 

That makes it three goals in three games for the player since he recovered from a minor injury at the start of the campaign.

Leeds United would be right to keep him on their wishlist going forward.
