Leeds United fans hopeful of a January transfer swoop for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle are set to be very disappointed.

The Newcastle United striker scored 24 goals for West Brom during a loan spell at the Hawthorns last season but has struggled for regular football at St James’ Park this term.

In the summer, Leeds were linked with the proven Championship marksmen. The Northern Echo reported that Leeds had made contact about a deal for the player.

However, nothing ever came to fruition and Leeds instead signed Eddie Nketiah as the back-up to first-choice striker Patrick Bamford.

During a Leeds United Q&A session on Leeds Live yesterday the question was asked regarding a Leeds approach for Gayle in January. It was quickly shot down. The response was clear, There is ‘no chance’ that Leeds can sign gayle as their Financial Fair Play boundaries would be ‘obliterated’.

Gayle is on big money at Newcastle, with Spotrac suggesting he is currently on £40,000-a-week at the Premier League club.

Leeds United have worked hard to keep to the FFP regulations in the Championship and the summer sales of Kemar Roofe and Pontus Jansson were undoubtedly related.

Clearly, Leeds fans want to see any potential extra edge added to the team for the second half of the Championship campaign as they look to win promotion back to the Premier League.

However, Gayle will seemingly not be arriving at Elland Road.
