Leeds United fans share messages of support for former player Ronaldo Vieira

Former Leeds United midfielder Ronaldo Vieira has been subjected to racist abuse in Italy. The England under-20 international was starting for his current club Sampdoria, in Claudio Ranieri’s first game in charge of the struggling Serie A outfit.

A group of Roma fans made offensive noises toward Vieira and the Giallorossi’s official Twitter account even apologised for the antics of this section of fans on Twitter.

Vieira himself, in conversation with RaiSport, was clearly upset about the events but did not want to give oxygen to the situation.

“I heard it but I don’t want to talk about it. This happens too often, it shouldn’t be this way.”

His brother, Romario, also a former Leeds United player, was more opinionated on his own Twitter account.

Leeds United fans have also been fairly strong-willed on the matter, as made evident on Twitter.

Vieira left Leeds in the summer of 2018, joining the Italian side in a deal reported by The Guardian to be valued at around £6.2 million.

But he is still considered one of their own by the Leeds United fans. Vieira came through the ranks at Thorp Arch and, when suspended for a recent Sampdoria fixture, he even came back to West Yorkshire to watch Leeds take on Barnsley in the Championship earlier this season.

So he has received plenty of support from his former club and rightly so.
