A number of Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the news – confirmed on the Premier League’s website – that Jay-Roy Grot has been included in the Whites’ squad for the competition this season.
It has felt as if the writing has been on the wall for Grot at Leeds for some time. The Dutchman has not played for the club in more than two years.
He is yet to feature under Marcelo Bielsa, heading out on loan on two occasions at a time when the Whites tended to only use the loan market for players who seemingly have little chance of playing for the club again.
No player loaned out during Bielsa’s first two years in charge has made a first-team appearance for Leeds upon their return. And Grot looked set to be no different.
He was unable to secure a move away in the summer – seemingly due to injury. SportNieuws reported in September that he was set to be sidelined for most of the year after complications following surgery on his knee.
Interestingly however, it appears that there remains the smallest chance that Grot could yet get another opportunity. The 22-year-old has been included in Leeds’s Premier League squad for this season.
The Whites have only named 19 senior players on the list. But it is intriguing that Grot has made the cut given that someone like Conor Shaughnessy has been left out.
For many, the news has simply acted as a reminder that Grot remains at the club. And there is no question that it would come as a huge surprise to most if he got any chance under Bielsa upon his return from injury.
However, there are some who would not mind seeing Grot play again. There were a couple of glimpses of potential when he previously featured.
And given what Bielsa has done for a number of Leeds players during his time at Elland Road, some think that Grot could improve if given the opportunity.
Here is how some of the fans reacted to the news concerning Grot…

I’m actually pleased about Grot, we don’t have many options up top, I genuinely believe with his height, presence, power and pace, Bielsa could unleash his talent 👍

Jay-Roy Grot wasn’t the worst of what Orta signed when he used Football Manager to scout. No denying his physical talent. But surely this is just an administration move naming him in our squad?

Imagine what Bielsa could do with Grot. He’s big, powerful and pretty quick. I’d actually give him a chance under God.
