Joe Gelhardt may not have got on the scoresheet as Leeds United’s under-23s beat Sunderland 3-1 on Monday, but that has not stopped some of the Whites supporters backing the attacker for a first-team chance in the near future.
Leeds were superb against the Black Cats. It was Sam Greenwood who scored all three of their goals. But it was a brilliant performance all-round for Mark Jackson’s men.

And Gelhardt was arguably one of the most impressive players on show. The 18-year-old played as a second striker behind Greenwood, and caused the home side all sorts of problems.
He provided the assist for the opening with a stunning pass through for Greenwood. He also won the free-kick on the edge of the box that his teammate curled into the back of the net.

Gelhardt will perhaps be a little disappointed that he did not get a goal himself. In the first-half, he produced an outstanding run into the box along with some skill that hinted that he is not long for under-23 football. Unfortunately, he dragged his effort wide.
And plenty of supporters have taken to social media to heap praise on Gelhardt. Many have insisted that they would not be surprised to see him make his senior debut before the end of the campaign.
They are incredibly excited about what he may go on to achieve with Marcelo Bielsa’s side. And they are only more convinced that bringing him in in the summer was a masterstroke after the Whites’ win.
Here is what some of the fans made of Gelhardt’s latest performance for the under-23s…
