Leeds United youngster Callum Nicell has been an odd absence from pre-season at Elland Road. The talented young Irishman has not been featuring for the club in a variety of fixtures and it is now clear why.
As reported by Leeds Live, the 19-year-old is currently on trial at Premier League side Leicester City. Nicell played for the Leicester under-23s against Hednesford Town in a friendly on Friday as Leeds appear ready to let him go.
It is quite a turnaround from 12 months ago.
Nicell looked as though he might be the next breakthrough star from the Leeds United academy. After impressive form at Thorp Arch, he found himself among the senior squad under Paul Heckingbottom.
He was on the bench for Championship clashes against Sunderland and Preston North End and was handed a new two-year deal at Leeds last September.
But the Republic of Ireland youth international has failed to build on that momentum and made no in-roads to the first-team last term. Leeds United are now seemingly prepared to lose him.
It certainly has some fans disappointed on Twitter. Many felt that Nicell had what it takes to be a star at Leeds and feel letting him leave the club might be a hasty decision…
Yep real pity I like Nicell a really tidy footballer who I think will go on to have a decent career, it’s just unfortunate for him he has Phillips McCalmont Jenkins & Kenneh all fighting for that same spot

I like Nicell and I’d have loaned him out tbh but Mccalmont over took him last season

Another sitting midfielder well down the list, I would of liked to have seen a loan but guess they explored that

Maybe so mate, doesn’t make any sort of serious dent in our team like just seems a strange move

It wasn’t long back that Oriol Rey was being tipped up as the next breakthrough. There’s been some strange goings on this summer all round.

Not every player can make the first team, why don’t our fans get that?

Always thought this kid was decent

Leeds released both these players as surplus to our needs unfortunately. Nicell always looked very promising.

Nicell and Dalby will go on to forge good careers in the game, shame it’s not with us
