Leeds United dealt blow in Miguel Gutierrez transfer pursuit as Real Madrid outline plans
According to El Espanol, Real Madrid are set to deny Leeds United the chance to sign Miguel Gutierrez this summer with Zinedine Zidane prepared to back the teenager.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites are understood to be interested in signing Gutierrez on loan for the 2021/22 campaign, having become aware to Los Blancos’ resistance to a permanent deal.
But it is unlikely that the 19-year-old will be moving to Elland Road at the end of the season, as Zidane intends to unleash him as part of the Real Madrid first-team as the primary rival to Ferland Mendy with Marcelo due to be transfer listed.
Gutierrez has already been afforded opportunities to earn Zidane’s trust this term and also has the support of Galacticos icon Raul, having doubled his duties with the Castilla side and senior squad as a wild card when needed.
The former Getafe prospect made his Real Madrid debut from the bench at Cadiz last month, before earning two further substitute appearances in the closing stages of La Liga fixtures with Osasuna and Sevilla.
Leeds had been weighing up a loan move that featured an option to buy Gutierrez next year amid plans to sign a potential rival for Stuart Dallas (TEAMtalk), with club chiefs eager to add depth behind Bielsa’s versatile favourite.
Dallas is one of just three men to have started all 35 of the Whites’ Premier League fixtures this season with Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford, but having played a team-high 3,141 minutes across appearances in either full-back role and a variety of midfield positions.
Dallas’ relentless run of action and importance to Bielsa in a number of roles will likely see that Leeds target a new full-back in the summer in order not to leave the Argentine short next term, but may have to identify alternatives to Gutierrez with his future in Madrid.
It will come as a blow to the Whites to be denied the chance to sign Gutierrez even on a dry loan without an option to purchase the Spain U19 international, as he has established a solid reputation in his home country that would offer plenty of promise for years to come.
Spain’s U17 coach David Gordo told AS last year that he expects Gutierrez will become one of Europe’s top defenders, as he ‘has the characteristics of the perfect left-back for Real Madrid.’
Bielsa would surely have liked to that be the perfect left-back for Leeds with Gutierrez able to show his quality at both ends of the pitch, and boasts what Gordo describes as a ‘winning mentality’ that could have seen him succeed in making the switch to Elland Road.
