‘I don’t know why’: BBC pundit shocked by 22-year-old Leeds player v Wolves

Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk has been criticised by BBC Sport pundit Clinton Morrison for an error he made against Wolves on Friday night.

In first-half injury time, the Whites centre-back attempted a back-pass, but ended up slicing the ball up in the air.

Daniel Podence nipped in and found Raul Jimenez, whose attempt at a lob went wide of the far post.

Although Struijk wasn’t punished on that occasion, it didn’t stop fans and pundits wondering what he was trying to do.

“Huge chance,” Morrison said on BBC Radio 5 Live (18/3/22, 20:53). “I don’t know what Pascal Struijk is doing there.

“He sees Daniel Podence – just clear it into row Z, you are into added time. I don’t know why he is trying to be clever.

“Raul Jimenez tries to lob the goalkeeper after he sees he is off his line.

“It is probably the right thing to do but he gets it horribly wrong.”

“Unbelievable” talent has struggled in recent weeks

Struijk is a talented player who Leeds skipper Liam Cooper has tipped for stardom.

“Pascal has absolutely everything to be one of the best centre-backs out there, he really has,” he told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“He’s unbelievable on the ball, he’s strong, good in the air. I always knew. We all know now. His improvement speaks for itself.”

However, the Dutchman hasn’t been in particularly great form lately, making several errors in recent weeks.

Against Leicester, Struijk earned himself a booking after getting into a foot race with Jamie Vardy and hauling him down.

“As a defender, if you’re on the halfway line with Jamie Vardy, you know what you’re playing against,” Rio Ferdinand said on BT Sport at the time.

“I don’t know why he’s playing in the same line as him when he’s not even quick. You’ve got to give yourself a yard or two to see ball and man.

“The moment you get into a foot race with this guy, it’s curtains, it’s over for you.”
