Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa may be a hero throughout the West Yorkshire city because of his impact at Elland Road, but he is not yet revered in the god-like status he has at his hometown club.

Bielsa is a legendary figure at his former club Newell’s Old Boys. The Argentine won the 1991 Apertura and 1992 Clausura with The Lepers and also took them to the 1992 Copa Libertadores final. A former Newell’s player, his legend is cemented with the club’s stadium name – Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.

Because of his new found love of Leeds, a kinship has developed between the Argentine club and the Championship leaders online.

At the weekend, one intrepid Newell’s fan decided to take on a pilgrimage to see Bielsa’s Leeds in action. It is quite the journey as well. As the crow flies, Rosario to Leeds is approximately a 14,000-mile round trip.

Alfonso Quaranta, a lawyer from Rosario, travelled to the game with his son and, as posted on Twitter it appears that Marcelo Bielsa was happy to see a Newell’s shirt on show.

In fact, he even cracked a smile in the photo opportunity, something the stoic Argentine only does when genuinely inspired to do so.

It seems that Bielsa not only made this fan’s day, but the fan made Bielsa’s, after a disappointing home draw against Derby County.
