Championship promotion hopefuls Leeds United are interested in signing Burnley outcast Ben Gibson, according to the Northern Echo.
Premier League club Newcastle are interested in the player on a season-long loan, but Leeds are keen to show their hand.
The 26-year-old didn’t have the best of campaigns during 2018/19. He featured just once in the league following his £15 million switch from Middlesbrough (BBC Sport).
Leeds aren’t the only club to be keen on joining Newcastle in the race. The report suggests that Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Norwich and Sheffield United would all be keen on his services.
The Whites are in the market for a new central defender after Pontus Jansson joined Brentford.
Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi are still at the club, whilst Ben White has also been added on loan from Brighton.
Gibson earns £40k-a-week at Turf Moor and with Financial Fair Play hanging over lots of EFL clubs these days, Leeds may need Burnley’s help in terms of salary.
Gibson would be a quality signing, not least because he is a similar defender to that of Jansson.
The big Swede has departed Elland Road and that represents a blow. Gibson’s arrival, however, could see Leeds fans asking, Pontus who?
The fact that Gibson didn’t play much for the Clarets last season is a bit surprising.
It was anticipated that he would return to the Premier League following Boro’s relegation and enhance his chances of international recognition.
That wasn’t the case, however, with Gibson struggling to force his way into Sean Dyche’s team.
Regular football would definitely appeal to Gibson and if Leeds could pull off a loan deal it should be seen as a massive coup.
He fits what Bielsa likes in a defender smartly and he would be a magnificent signing for the Whites.
