Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has shared what Elland Road boss Marcelo Bielsa is on his case about “all the time”, in conversation with Sky Sports.
Phillips has been sensational for the Whites this season, his high-calibre displays helping the Elland Road side up to top spot in the table and on the brink of a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2004.
The 24-year-old was given his debut at Leeds by Neil Redfearn in 2014 and spent his formative years in the first team as a central midfielder, but Bielsa’s arrival at Elland Road in the summer of 2018 saw him pushed further back.
Phillips has since prospered as a defensive midfielder to the extent that the Leeds faithful have nicknamed him the “Yorkshire Pirlo” and there have even been calls for England manager Gareth Southgate to consider giving him a call-up.
Bielsa has been instrumental in Phillips’ progress over the past few years and, speaking to Sky Sports, he discussed the Whites coach and his methods.
“He is relentless, especially with his weight targets and how he goes about training every day,” said Phillips. “I never thought he would improve me as much as he has. He is on my case about my weight all the time!”
Phillips has grown into a fantastic player who’s very much ready to grace the Premier League – hopefully with Leeds – and perhaps even come into contention for a place in the England squad.
Bielsa is known for his attention to detail and demands placed upon the players, but those methods work, and then some.
Leeds are on the verge of promotion from the Championship and it would be just what both Bielsa and Phillips – not to mention everyone connected with the Whites – to be plying their trade in the top flight next term.
