Kalvin Phillips has applauded Reading midfielder Lewis Baker on Instagram after the ex-Leeds United star helped Reading edge towards Championship safety on Saturday.
The Royals earned an excellent 2-1 win over Brentford, moving up to 19th place and opening up a four-point gap between themselves and 22nd-placed Rotherham United.
Baker – who was recalled by Chelsea from his loan at Leeds in January – was involved in Reading’s first as he played a lovely pass to another ex-Leeds man Modou Barrow, who put Yakou Meite through on goal.
The latter doubled his tally just seven minutes later to give Reading a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes. They held on to win 2-1, and Phillips heaped praise on Baker after the latter posted on Instagram.
Baker has been excellent for Reading during the second half of the season. Their insistence on playing the ball from out the back has come under criticism, but has certainly suited Baker.
Having only played for Leeds 14 times during the first half of the season, Baker already has 15 appearances under his belt at Reading. Indeed, he is thriving at the Madjeski Stadium.
Should Leeds regret not giving Baker as much game time as he deserved? No – Matuesz Klich, Tyler Roberts, Kalvin Phillips and Adam Forshaw are all better, but perhaps with game time he could have done more at Elland Road.
