Report: Leeds will have to pay £20m to sign 'outstanding' player, after first move already made

Leeds United are tracking Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino but would need to find £20m if they wish to the land the Japanese star before Monday’s deadline.

The Independent reported yesterday that Leeds have expressed an interest in signing Minamino. However, that initial claim suggested that Liverpool wouldn’t be open to selling. However, overnight talks of a Reds move to Porto star Luis Diaz seems to have changed the landscape a bit when it comes to Minamino.

The Times has now reported that Liverpool would be looking for around £20m if they are to sell Minamino. That would represent a profit for the Reds, who paid less than £8m to bring the forward to Anfield. It seems Diaz’s impending arrival would signal the end for Minamino, while allowing the Reds to recoup some money themselves.

Marcelo Bielsa is desperate to add to his squad before Monday comes to an end. Leeds have suffered from inconsistencies and injuries this term. Minamino, then, is clearly seen as someone who can adapt to Bielsa’s high-energy tactics at Elland Road.

Minamino has actually done quite well this season for Jurgen Klopp. He’s hit six goals in 18 games, but knows he will never dislodge the likes of Salah and Mane in the starting XI. A fresh start, then, could work for the forward.

TBR’s View: Minamino A Good Fit For Leeds

Liverpool aren’t daft when it comes to their transfer business. They know that if they bring Diaz in, someone might have to make way. Here, it looks like Minamino might be the one sacrificed.

However, from a Leeds perspective, this isn’t bad business. £20m might sound a lot but this is a player coming from a top quality team. He has a point to prove, and has shown more than enough in flashes to suggest he’d be a top player.

Jurgen Klopp likes him, too. The German branded his man ‘outstanding’ last year and it’s easy to see why. If Leeds need and want more goals in the XI, then Minamino could be a fine addition.
