Leeds told they'll have to break club record to sign 'brilliant' player this month - report
With the January transfer window in full swing, Leeds United have the opportunity to bolster their squad.
Marcelo Bielsa’s charges have endured a tough season so far amid mixed form and depleted ranks.
A December report in The Sun claimed Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa is eager to snap up a top forward.
The same outlet linked the Whites with Blackburn’s Ben Brereton Diaz.
As well as Leeds, the likes of West Ham, Wolves, Brighton and Burnley are also reportedly eyeing the 22-year-old.
However, the Elland Road outfit would have to break their transfer record if they are to sign Brereton.
According to TEAMtalk, Rovers want £30million for the Chile international.
Leeds’ current record signing is Rodrigo, who cost the Whites £27million.
Understandably, Blackburn don’t want to lose their star striker mid-season.
Brereton has netted an impressive 20 goals from just 25 league games this term.
That mark puts him behind only Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic (22) in the race for the Championship golden boot.
Boss Tony Mowbray sung Brereton’s praises after helping their side rescue a draw at Bristol City in November.
“So many superlatives about Ben,” Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph.
“He had a goal chalked off when he was marginally offside in the first half.
“We just need to keep him going.
“He’s a brilliant kid, I just like working with Ben because he’s such a nice kid, he’s so humble, so hardworking and honest for the team.
