Leeds United put in an excellent performance to start their Championship campaign with a bang this afternoon. The Whites dominated the Championship favourites Stoke City, winning the game 3-1.
There were plenty of outstanding performances from Leeds players, who have clearly brought into Marcelo Bielsa’s philosophies this summer.
One who particular shined was Polish midfielder Mateusz Klich. Looking at Stoke’s imposing looking midfield of Joe Allen, Badou N’Diaye and Oghenekaro Etebo it was easy to see Leeds struggling in the centre of the park.
But Klich was sensational throughout. He controlled the game from the midfield and had Welsh international Allen on his heels for much of the game. Considering this was a player cast aside by Leeds last season against a player who Stoke valued at £25 million this summer, it was something of a remarkable showing.
Klich never truly won his way into former Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen’s plans last season. He was therefore loaned out to Utrecht in the Netherlands, whilst Eunan O’Kane continued to struggle in midfield for Leeds.
Looking at that decision now it seems crazy that Leeds did not see what Bielsa has in the Polish star.
Would he have started if Adam Forshaw was fit? Perhaps not. But he took this opportunity with both hands and dominated one of the most expensively assembled midfields in the Championship this season.
