Leeds-supporting pundit explains why Whites need to sign player in one position

Dominic Matteo has claimed that Leeds United need to sign someone in the summer who can emulate their current striker Patrick Bamford.

Bamford, who cost the Whites £10million (BBC) in 2018, has been one the biggest success stories across the entire Premier League this season.

The left-footed centre-forward has 14 goals and eight assists in the league so far this campaign, which is an incredible return considering many had previously written him off from being a top-flight player.

Aged 27, he should be reaching his peak years now, but there isn’t too much cover behind him in the squad at Elland Road.

Versatile forwards Rodrigo Moreno and Tyler Roberts have the flexibility to slot into a number one role when needed. However, Leeds-supporting pundit and ex-Whites player Matteo wants his former club to consider signing a central striker ahead of next season.

“We need more goals, too… Patrick Bamford has been excellent but we do need someone else, a couple of players to be hitting 15 maybe. We make a lot of chances and we miss a few, so we need to sharpen up there,” Matteo wrote for the Yorkshire Evening Post.

TBR’s View:

Bamford can’t have asked for a better individual season, and trying to pass the 15-goal mark in the final five league matches will surely be a personal ambition for him.

He’s not quite managed to break into the fold for a position in the England squad, but there may still be an outside shot of forcing his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans if he can finish the campaign strongly during the next month.

If Marcelo Bielsa’s side are going to kick on next year to try compete for European football, no doubt the manager will need a deeper squad.

An extra goalscoring forward to battle directly with Bamford would be a massive help.
