Eddie Nketiah broke the England Under-21 record on Tuesday as he scored his 14th goal in just his 12th appearance, overtaking Alan Shearer and Francis Jeffers – and two Leeds players have predicted the Arsenal star to continue breaking records.
Nketiah, 21, was tasked with finding the back of the net against Turkey’s Under-21 side to overtake both Shearer and Jeffers – who had previously scored 13 goals for the Under-21’s. England also needed a win to qualify from Group C for Euro 2021.
England took the lead in the first half through an own goal from Trabzonspor defender Huseyin Turkmen – after Ryan Sessegnon broke free and his cross deflected off the defender into the net. The scoreline remained for much of the match.
However, Sessegnon was involved against the Hoffenheim loanee handed Nketiah his golden chance to break the record in the 88th minute. Through on goal, he put England 2-0 up with a very cute left-foot finish – and posted on Instagram after the game.
Nketiah had two goals disallowed in either half as he scored two tap-ins – but both were ruled offside. Turkey scored an injury-time consolation through Brentford star Halil Dervişoğlu – who is currently on loan at FC Twente.
The Arsenal striker also missed a penalty just before his goal, slapping the post after a lovely pass from Sessegnon saw Leicester City defender James Justin fouled in the box. But a lovely finish in the 88th minute saw Nketiah break the record.
Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale also saved a penalty in the second half. Both former Arsenal star and Leeds defender Luke Ayling, as well as Tyler Roberts, took to Instagram to applaud Nketiah – after Nketiah want on loan to Leeds last term.
Both Leeds stars predicted many more to come from Nketiah in the coming years.
