Leeds star Patrick Bamford responds to David O’Leary comments

Patrick Bamford has explained that comments from ex-Leeds United player and manager David O’Leary have frustrated him.

Bamford, 26, has helped the Yorkshire giants earn promotion from the Championship this season and he scored 16 goals to help them clinch the league title.

The English centre-forward has received criticism at times this campaign for his finishing, but ultimately he got the Whites over the line and his work-rate in attack is so vital in the system for manager Marcelo Bielsa.

O’Leary recently praised Bamford for his individual campaign, but stressed the importance of Leeds signing a forward ahead of next season in the Premier League.

“Patrick Bamford has done great, but I still think another centre-forward would be very important for them (Leeds), personally. I’d like to see them sign a really top-class centre-forward,” O’Leary told talkSPORT on Monday.

Bamford has not responded too kindly to those comments and feels that his overall contribution to the team is overlooked, plus he is eager to be the main man at striker next season in the top-flight.

“I’ve taken criticism throughout the whole season, and while from fans you can kind of understand it because they’re frustrated and they just want their team to win, I think sometimes when you get it from people who have played the game yet they’re still not seeing the whole package, that’s what’s frustrating,” Bamford told talkSPORT in response to O’Leary’s comments.

“I agree that you can’t go into the Premier League with one striker, that’s a given, but I also back myself.”

TBR’s View – Bamford can play big role next season

Despite not being the most pleasing on the eye, Bamford has been essential in the Leeds promotion success and has proven his fair share of doubters wrong along the way.

The left-footed striker has come up with some goals in big moments and ultimately repaid Bielsa for the faith he’s shown in him.

His pressing from the front is so important in the high intensity style of the Leeds team and he won’t be giving up his shirt easily, even if some big names are being linked with moves to Elland Road.
