Kalvin Phillips starred for England on Wednesday night as he picked up his seventh cap for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions during a 2-1 win over Poland – and he has sent some Instagram praise to a Manchester United player.
Phillips, 25, started all three games for England over the international break, strengthening his claims for a place in England’s Euro 2021 squad this summer. England won all three games, beating San Marino, Albania and Poland.
On Wednesday night, England were not at their best as Jakub Molder capitalised on a mistake from John Stones to cancel out Harry Kane’s opener from the penalty spot. But eventually, England got the break through.
Stones atoned for his error and produced a brilliant assist, heading back across the box to find Manchester United captain Harry Maguire – who lashed home a half volley. The United defender posted on Instagram after scoring.
Phillips was incredibly accurate with his passing, completing 46 of 48 attempted passes – according to WhoScored. He was only second to Manchester City’s Phil Foden, who was accurate with all 40 of his.
But it was Maguire that provided the crucial touch to win the game and Phillips brushed aside the bitter rivalry between Leeds and Manchester United to send the defender a six-word message on his Instagram post (above).
