Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw has told the Talking Shutt podcast that he cannot understand why Mousa Dembele left Tottenham in the January transfer window to join Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F.

Dembele, 32, left Spurs after more than six years with the north London side – where he clocked up 249 appearances in all competitions. It is believed that the fast pace of the Premier League became too much for Dembele, who was prone to injury.

The Belgian was renowned for his physicality in the middle of the park, but also his speed over short distances. It allowed him to drift past opponents, boasting the speed and power of a winger when taking on opponents.

As Forshaw says, Dembele had everything. Asked who is the best player he has faced, Leeds star Forshaw named Dembele – before questioning why Tottenham ever let him leave the club, saying he could get in any side.

“I’ve always said Mousa Dembele,” Forshaw said. “When we [Middlesbrough] played Tottenham in the Premier League, he made me look like a kid. He used to just walk with me on his arm.

“As a central midfielder, if you’ve got everything and then have the ability to take somebody on as well, to be a top dribbler and to have everything – he was a top player. Don’t really know why he left the Premier League, he could get in any side.”

TBR’s view – Should Tottenham have kept Dembele?

Yes. Tottenham should have kept Dembele until the end of the season, where they have finally replaced the former Fulham star by splashing out a club-record fee to sign France international Tanguy Ndombele.

Even then, Ndombele is yet to have the same impact as Dembele did during his time at Spurs – though it is still early. If Spurs fans were given the chance to have Dembele back, though, they would surely take it.
