Leeds should reignite PL goalkeeper interest as rival eyes £30m bid

Kristoffer Klaesson joined Leeds United as their backup goalkeeper in the summer following the Whites’ decision to loan Kiko Casilla out after a mixed spell at Elland Road.

Few fans were particularly disappointed about the decision on Casilla. He was a controversial figure during his time at Leeds. And he made some costly mistakes when he did play for the club.

The £1 million move for Klaesson evoked memories of the decision to sign Illan Meslier. Like the Frenchman, Klaesson arrived with plenty of first-team experience under his belt. It appeared that the 21-year-old may prove to be a very credible rival for Meslier.

Unsurprisingly, he was not the only goalkeeper Leeds looked at in the summer. In fact, it was claimed at one stage that Newcastle received a bid from the Whites for Freddie Woodman.

Woodman has been desperately unlucky during his time on Tyneside. He finds himself behind Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow. And reports at the weekend suggested that the Magpies are planning a move for £30 million-rated goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos in January.

With that in mind, Woodman may well want to move next month. And perhaps, Leeds should be one of the sides who prepare a bid for the 24-year-old.

Leeds should target Freddie Woodman amid goalkeeper teething problems

Unfortunately, Klaesson has not had the easiest time. He is yet to make his first-team debut for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. But he has been a stalwart for the under-23s. And he has gone on to make some disappointing mistakes.

He has shown glimpses of how talented he is. But those who follow Mark Jackson’s men closely will be a little nervous should Klaesson be needed in the senior side anytime soon.

Woodman therefore, could be a shrewd addition. He was excellent during his time at Swansea City. And he would arguably be a safer bet if Leeds’ recent injury curse had any impact on Meslier in the months ahead.
