Leeds reportedly want £30m-rated star that Kyle Bartley labelled a 'joy to watch' in 2019

Leeds are reportedly battling West Ham and other big European clubs in the race to sign West Bromwich Albion star Matheus Pereira after the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League – and Kyle Bartley’s verdict from 2019 will excite fans.

Pereira, 25, has been in sensational form for the Baggies despite their relegation from the Premier League – having a hand in 15 goals during his 31 league games. Scoring 10, Pereira has also created five goals, including a brilliant solo effort at Arsenal.

The Express that Leeds and West Ham want to sign Pereira from West Brom, as do Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig and Champions League-chasing Leicester City. It is believed that the Baggies are to demand a fee of £30million for Pereira.

Pereira joined West Brom initially on loan from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2019 and helped the Baggies gain promotion, with 28 goal involvements last season. Bartley, who played for Leeds during 2016-17, raved about Pereira in 2019.

“They’re a joy to watch, play with and train with,” Bartley told the Express & Star in December 2019, when talking about Pereira and Grady Diangana. “They’ve been fantastic all season so far. I just try to stay away from them [in training].”

TBR’s view – Pereira would be a stunning signing for Leeds

Leeds need an attacking midfielder. Tyler Roberts is a player with potential but is he the man to take Leeds forward from the 10 role? Probably not. Rodrigo has proven inconsistent throughout his first season, despite scoring against Spurs on Sunday.

Pereira has shown his talent. He can play out wide, he can play in the middle. Would he be willing to put the work in to become a Marcelo Bielsa player? Maybe. At £30million, is he worth it? Without a doubt. He is worth the expense, worth the risk.
