Leeds reportedly targeting assist machine that was compared to David Beckham in March

Leeds United are said to have made an offer to sign Stuttgart defender Borna Sosa this summer according to a Croatian agent, as the left-back continues to shine in the Bundesliga – a player that was compared to David Beckham just a few weeks ago.

Sosa, 23, is enjoying the best season of his career so far. Clocking up 26 appearances throughout the 2020-21 campaign, Sosa has laid on a whopping 10 assists from the left side of Stuttgart’s defence – attracting attention from numerous top-flight clubs.

That is according to Croatian agent Franjo Vranjković, who has told Sportske Novosti that Leeds have made an offer for 19-time Croatia Under-21 international but that there is competition from other clubs. He claims Stuttgart want £17million for him.

“It is important for him is to make a transfer to England. He has an offer from Leeds, and other Premier League clubs are also interested,” Vranjkovic said. “Only the English can pay as much as Stuttgart want. I estimate it will be about €20m (£17m).”

Speaking back in March as Sosa continued to shine for Stuttgart, sporting director Sven Mislintat – who occupied the same role at Arsenal before moving to Stuttgart – compared Sosa to David Beckham largely due to his crossing and set-piece ability.

“Borna’s said himself that David Beckham is his role model, and I think he has the same qualities,” Mislintat told Bild – as per the Bundesliga’s official website in March. “His left foot is a real weapon.”

“He puts in crosses from every angle: sometimes chipped, sometimes drilled, sometimes flat, sometimes in behind, sometimes to the front post, other times to the back post.”

TBR’s view – Sosa would be a stunning signing for Leeds

His ability to create goals is incredible. As Mislintat states, his delivery is exceptional and while Leeds do not have the height perhaps necessary to score goals regularly from lofted crosses – Marcelo Bielsa’s side do reach the byline regularly.

Look at the first two goals Leeds scored against Tottenham. Jack Harrison’s brilliant cross caused havoc before Stuart Dallas scored, while Patrick Bamford tapped home Gjanni Alioski’s cross. Sosa would get plenty of assists in the Leeds side.

At £17million, Leeds could do a lot worse than signing the Croatian.
