Caleb Ekuban has posted on Instagram after scoring the winner as Trabzonspor beat Istanbul Basaksehir in the Turkish Cup final 2-1 – prompting reaction from Leeds outcast Jay-Roy Grot and Hadi Sacko.
Ekuban, 26, broke through in the last 10 minutes and rounded the Basaksehir goalkeeper before bundling the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle. Lewis Baker also featured in the match, coming on as a sub during first-half injury time.
Since leaving Leeds for Trabzonspor, Ekuban has impressed in Turkey. In his 85 Trabzonspor appearances, he has won the league and now the cup as well as scoring 25 goals and creating 16 more – and becoming a fully-fledged Ghana international.
Ekuban has now posted on Instagram as he held the Turkish Cup aloft, underlining his delight at winning a second trophy with the SuperLig giants since his move – which was an initial loan deal before it was made permanent in 2019, for £900k (TFN).
It is a stark contrast to Ekuban’s spell at Leeds. During his time at Elland Road, Ekuban managed just two goals in 21 appearances for the Whites – but was loaned out immediately upon the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa. Victor Orta engineered his exit.
Grot, who remains on the books at Leeds – albeit for the next six months – and has been included in the 25-man Premier League squad, responded by posting “crazy innit”. Sacko also responded, congratulating Ekuban.
