Report: Leeds at front of queue to sign 'top class' Golden Boot winner; Newcastle also keeping tabs

Leeds United will be desperate to sign a new striker this summer and they could get their man in the form of MLS star, Valentin Castellanos.

According to 90Min, Castellanos is interesting Leeds after Manchester City passed up on the opportunity to sign the impressive Argentinian star. It’s claimed that City chose not to take up their option as being the parent club of New York City FC to sign the striker. However, they did recommend him to others, with Leeds one of those clubs.

It’s claimed by 90Min that Leeds are impressed with what they’ve seen from Castellanos. There is an acceptance that they will face competition for him, though, with the likes of Newcastle and Everton credited with interest in the same report.

Jesse Marsch is desperate for a new forward after Patrick Bamford’s injury ravaged campaign caused Leeds all sorts of problems last season. Castellanos could be the answer, having won the MLS Golden Boot with 19 in 32.

The 23-year-old would no doubt be open to a move to England. Given the MLS is still operating at a level below some of Europe’s best leagues, Castellanos could see a move to Leeds as a chance to push for international caps in a World Cup year.

TBR’s View: Leeds Need A Striker, Castellanos Could Do The Business

Leeds need to get a new forward this summer. There is simply no way they can head into another PL season with just Bamford and Gelhardt up top.

Castellanos is an interesting option. He certainly seems to know where the net is and former Celtic man, Ronnie Delia, labelled the striker as ‘top class’ previously. Of course, Marsch will know him well as well, given his own MLS links.

For Leeds, it’s an important window this summer. They can’t afford another tight relegation battle.
