They report that Jesse Marsch is looking at ways to improve his engine room ahead of the January transfer window.

Gueye is currently fourth in the Marseille midfield pecking order, and has made just 11 appearances this term.

The 23-year-old is behind Matteo Guendouzi, Valentin Rongier and Jordan Veretout.

In addition, Marseille president Pablo Longoria is ‘looking to recover millions of euros during the next transfer window’.

Apparently, he would not be against the idea of parting with Gueye, who has an ‘interesting market value’.

Gueye began his career at Le Havre and rose through the ranks to become a first-teamer.

In 2020, he joined Marseille on a free transfer and has gone on to make 92 competitive appearances.

Gueye has also won 12 caps for Senegal, who will be playing at the 2022 World Cup.

Le Havre academy technical director Michael Bunel has compared Gueye’s style of play to that of Paul Pogba.

“It’s not easy to compare because the comparison is always complicated but I would say, even if the personality was different, Paul Pogba,” he told The Athletic.

“He was tall, thin but maybe the personality was different because Paul was somebody very confident. Pape is more shy.

He doesn’t talk a lot — very quiet, always listens — but when he speaks, everybody listens to him.

But the way he was playing; I think Paul was a little bit more powerful than him at the same age but they are playing in the same position, so it’s easy to compare for us.”

And a source within the Pozzo scouting network said: “He is tall, lean and an athletic left-footed central midfielder, who possesses an excellent passing range to switch play effectively.

“When he’s at the top of his game, he looks unbelievable.”
