If Marcelo Bielsa has learnt one thing about the Championship campaign as Leeds United manager, is that squad depth is a necessity – and his preference to have a small squad simply is not sustainable.
The Whites flew out of the traps. Leading at Christmas, they have made unwanted history by failing to gain automatic promotion. They are now in danger of failing to return to the Premier League.
Yes, Leeds have an excellent starting eleven but almost every single first-team player has been out injured at some point. Only Mateusz Klich has managed to remain fit for the entire campaign.
If they do fail to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2004, more depth is needed next season to mount a second promotion push. A centre-back, holding midfielder, winger and striker are likely to be strengthened.

Holding midfield has seen Kalvin Phillips thrive, but he has little back-up, with Adam Forshaw much better in a slightly more advanced role. Leeds need a number four, and it has seen them linked with Ander Iturraspe.
But play-off semi-final opponents Derby County may boast the experienced, gritty anchorman they require – on a free transfer – and it is a familiar face to Leeds fans.
Bradley Johnson is now set to leave Derby with his contract ending on June 30, and he will be available for nothing. Only turning 32 in April, Leeds’ young side desperately needs experience.

Johnson has that in abundance, with 209 Championship appearances to his name. He spent three years at Leeds between 2008 and 2011, clocking up 137 appearances.
He was a left-back or a left-winger in those days but now slightly slower, he sits in front of the defence and is renowned for his physical, aggressive approach. On a free, he is the perfect back-up for Phillips.
With Bielsa in need of depth in most positions, Johnson would be the ideal addition to his Elland Road squad if they have to make do with another season in the Championship.
