Leeds must reignite interest in Juan Foyth to add defensive depth

Leeds United need a new defender in January and former target Juan Foyth should top their list.

With a promotion bid looking likely, Marcelo Bielsa must ensure his Leeds squad has depth to cope with the demands of the Championship.

The games come thick and fast in the second tier and Leeds need a contingency plan in case of injuries.

Central defence is a worry for Leeds fans at the moment. Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper have established a strong first-choice pairing under Bielsa.

But the lack of depth in this department is a pressing concern. Bielsa needs to look for a short-term fix this January.

When Jansson or Cooper have missed games, full-back Gaetano Berardi has filled in at centre-half.

Leeds need a player who is more comfortable in the middle.

Foyth could be the answer to this conundrum and Leeds signing him on loan works for all parties.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender has not played a single game for the North London outfit this season. And a loan move would be the best possible thing for his development.

At Leeds, the 6ft 3in defender would be able to show his physicality in a tough division and team up with fellow Argentine Bielsa.

The 20-year-old is highly rated by club and country. And Leeds must look to secure the Argentina under-20 international’s short-term services to add depth to their centre-back department ahead of the run-in.
