Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that it is not the “right time” to discuss his future after being asked what his plans are beyond the end of the season.

Bielsa has guided Leeds to third in the Championship, but looks set to miss out on the automatic promotion slots after two successive defeats to Wigan Athletic and Brentford.

The 63-year-old, who is said to be earning a whopping £77,000 a week (Mirror), has a year left on the two-year deal he signed last summer. There has been suggestions that Bielsa could leave if the club fail to gain promotion.

Bielsa was asked if he was planning on staying at Elland Road with promotion now in doubt, and he stated that it is not the time to talk about him remaining at the club – also claiming it is not up top him.

“It’s not up to me and I don’t have any response to that. It’s not a decision that we have to take now and it’s not the right time to give my opinion on it,” Bielsa said.

TBR’s view

Keeping Bielsa is an absolute must, even if Leeds do not gain promotion. The club belong in the Premier League due to their size and stature, but failing to get promoted would not be the end of the world.

Losing Bielsa, would be. He has brought life back to Elland Road, and optimism back to Yorkshire. He has reminded the world what Leeds United are all about. Keeping him is key.
