With Tyler Roberts stealing the headlines with a stunning brace in Leeds United’s win over Hull City, you would be forgiven for forgetting that the Whites did sign a striker during the January transfer window.
Some fans may have felt that Jean-Kevin Augustin’s arrival at the start of the year was a game-changer in the Championship promotion race.
Signing Augustin looked to be a fantastic response to Eddie Nketiah’s departure. But the 22-year-old’s loan spell is yet to really get going.
He was taking some time to get up to speed. And he was still awaiting his first start for the Whites when he suffered an injury ahead of Leeds’s win over Middlesbrough.
Of course, Roberts’s incredible cameo may leave Augustin with a tougher task trying to get into the side. But perhaps, the Frenchman should actually be delighted to see Roberts make such an impact.
TBR View – Roberts takes pressure off Augustin
Before Roberts came back into the side, Augustin was seen by many as the one real alternative to Patrick Bamford, who has now gone seven games without a goal.
But that may have left Augustin under a lot of pressure. And based on his initial performances for both the first-team and under-23s, he may not be ready to rise to the challenge. He has looked like a player who struggled for game-time during the first-half of the season.
Roberts has now put himself in the striker mix. It is important to not put much pressure on the Wales international as well, but it is an encouraging sign.
Augustin can now focus on his recovery without feeling additional pressure about hitting the ground running upon his return.
And perhaps becoming a forgotten man for now will do Augustin some good as he looks to prove why the fans were so excited when he did arrive back in January.
