Perhaps one area that needed addressing in the summer was bringing in top-quality back-up for Kalvin Phillips, with Adam Forshaw now being used in a more advanced role – and it may be the reason Leeds have been linked with Nemanja Radoja.
Team Talk have claimed that 26-year-old midfielder Radoja is being eyed by Leeds, after the two-time Serbia international was released at the end of last season by La Liga side Celta Vigo. He failed to make a single appearance in 2018-19.
Indeed, Radoja suffered a long-term injury and it prevented him from playing. His last senior appearance came in May 2018, and that lead to Celta opting to release Radoja. But Leeds are not alone in their pursuit – West Ham and Brighton are also keen.
Though it remains if Radoja is still the same player he was prior to his injury, the midfielder certainly boasts plenty of quality. He has 146 career appearances with Celta, after joining the Spanish outfit from Vojvodina.
But should Leeds look to beat the Hammers or the Seagulls to his signature? Indeed, Marcelo Bielsa handed a debut to Northern Ireland youth international Alfie McCalmont in the 3-0 win over Salford City, and he is liked by the Argentine boss.

McCalmont’s rise has coincided with the appointment of Bielsa. He starred for the under-23 side last season, captaining the reserve side to success in the Professional Development League North – which has caught the eye of Bielsa.
With Bielsa’s style obviously suiting McCalmont, the 19-year-old has come on leaps and bounds in a short space of time and is likely to be used regularly in the senior side this season. He has the potential to become a Leeds regular.
Signing Radoja, then, would stunt McCalmont’s growth and path into the senior side. If Phillips gets an injury, McCalmont has a chance of replacing him. But Radoja would be another obstacle – and may prevent him from realising his potential.
If Bielsa wants to bring McCalmont into the senior side and give him every chance of becoming another product of the Thorp Arch academy, then he should forget about signing free agent Radoja.
