Leeds linked with midfielder in January, now available for nothing

Leeds United have been linked with a whole host of players from all over Europe since Marcelo Bielsa was appointed manager of the Yorkshire club, but the Argentine has only signed a handful of players during his year-long stint.

Magazine France Football claimed in the January window that 26-year-old midfielder Abeid was a target for Leeds. He has been impressing in French Ligue 1 side Dijon this season.

It has been a somewhat interesting career for the Algeria international. Starting out at Newcastle United, Abeid played 21 times in the senior team before moving to Panathinaikos – after a loan to Scottish side St. Johnstone.

He shone in Greece. Abeid played 72 times for Panathinaikos, finding the back of the net 14 times. He also laid on six assists in that time, and even helped his side win the Greek Cup.

It saw Abeid earn a move to Dijon, where he has since clocked up 75 appearances. This season, he has scored three goals in 26 games from the middle of the park in France’s top tier.

Now, French newspaper L’Equipe have claimed that Abeid is set to leave Dijon on a free. So, should Leeds reignite their reported interest from the start of the year, and lure Abeid back to England for a second spell?

Certainly, the player is a much more confident and improved individual than the one that was released by Newcastle. More experienced, Abeid has international caps and spells in different countries.

Leeds could do with central-midfield additions, with Adam Forshaw, Tyler Roberts and more spending time in the treatment room. Kalvin Phillips has little cover.

On a free, Abeid would be an excellent signing. Whether the player would want to move to Yorkshire after the Whites failed to gain promotion is a different story.
