Leeds United are reportedly battling Bundesliga clubs and Marseille to sign Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in the January transfer window – but the latest news means he could be about to team up with Rodrigo De Paul.
Mateta, 23, has been in excellent form for Mainz, scoring 10 goals in 17 games this season. Seven have come in 15 Bundesliga appearances, and three in the cup. He has scored two hat-tricks for the Bundesliga outfit.
However, a January exit is on the cards and French site Le Phoceen claim Leeds are interested – but face competition from German sides and Andre Villas-Boas’ Marseille. Now, Leeds could miss out to De Paul’s Udinese.
That is because Italian website CalcioMercato claim Udinese have opened talks to sign Mateta from Mainz – in a move that would see Argentina international De Paul and Mateta combine in Serie A.
TBR’s view – Connection could have been an Elland Road one
Instead the two players could be about to link up in the black and white of Udinese. Leeds were outpriced when it came to signing De Paul in the summer and now they could be about to miss out on Mateta too.
Leeds are now lacking in midfield – something that was evident in the defeat to Crawley. Leeds are also lacking in cover for Patrick Bamford. It means what could have been a Leeds combination, is now potentially an Udinese one.
