Leeds United may have been amongst the sides to have one eye on Barcelona’s latest Champions League clash in light of recent reports linking the Premier League side with one of their players.
Spanish outlet Sport reported earlier this month that the Whites have enquired about Martin Braithwaite. It was also claimed that West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion had asked about the 29-year-old.
Braithwaite was a surprise signing from Barca in the first place. And he went into this week having scored just one goal for the club following his move earlier this year.
Sport claimed that the Catalan giants want around £16.1 million for Braithwaite in January. However, due to their need to bring the wage bill down, they could also consider a loan deal.
It remains to be seen if any of the trio confirm their interest with some kind of bid. But perhaps, Braithwaite has increased the likelihood of offers coming in with his latest display.
The former Middlesbrough man was tasked with leading the line on Tuesday as Barcelona faced Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine.
Ronald Koeman’s men were all but through to the knockout stages heading into the game. But victory would wrap qualification up nicely.
And they did go on to secure the win. They won 4-0, with Braithwaite playing a key role in the performance.
It was his touch that set up Sergino Dest for the opener. And he then got their second and third goals.
The second came as he anticipated a flick-on towards the back post from a corner. Meanwhile, his brace was completed from the penalty spot after he was fouled. It was an emphatic finish from the Dane.
The goals will have certainly done Braithwaite’s confidence the world of good. And with the January window looming, his goals may well have alerted his reported admirers.
